Rights & licensing
Who owns what, decided upfront.
Your designs stay yours, our models stay ours, the rest agreed first.
Ask about a contract
In four sentences
- Your designs and data remain yours.
- A parts order buys parts and the agreed quality documentation — not the process recipe.
- If you want to run the process yourself, we agree licence or transfer terms at the start, not after.
- A process window belongs to the alloy, not the machine. We translate it to each machine through the thermal process and the machine interface. Never a file copy.
- Recipes are compiled per machine, never copied unchanged. ForgeOS On Demand is how licensed recipes reach your network.
Three things, kept apart
Stay yours.
As defined in the contract.
Licensed, not sold.
What each order includes

Full policy
Version 1, draft for approval.1. Purpose and scope
This policy explains who owns what and who may use what when you work with NEOFORGE or CITEC3D. It applies to part submissions, technical assessment, quotes, parts orders, optimization and pre-industrialization projects, materials programmes, process licences, transfer packages and ForgeOS software.
Your signed proposal or contract takes precedence over this policy. Every proposal contains a rights schedule that applies these principles to your project.
2. Three categories, always kept separate
| Category | What it includes | Who owns it |
|---|---|---|
| Your designs and data | CAD models, drawings, specifications, requirements, your build files and machine data, test results you provide, powder compositions and material data (for materials partners) | You. They remain yours. |
| Project deliverables | What the contract lists as deliverables, for example parts, inspection reports, analysis reports, documentation packages, corrected build files for a named machine | As defined in the contract. Each deliverable is listed with the right you receive: ownership, a usage licence, or internal use. |
| NEOFORGE models and software | ForgeOS Production Copilot, ForgeOS Engineering Copilot, material models, simulation and optimization methods, process-development know-how, process recipes and parameter sets we develop | NEOFORGE. Licensed, not sold. |
3. Your designs and data
- Your designs and data remain yours. Submitting a part, receiving an assessment, or placing an order transfers no rights in your designs or data to us.
- We use your designs and data only to prepare your technical assessment and quote, and to carry out the work you order.
- We do not use your geometry or data to train models shared with other customers without your written consent.
- We do not share your designs or data with third parties, except subcontractors we need for your order (for example a heat-treatment or testing partner). They are bound by confidentiality, and we tell you which work goes to subcontractors in the proposal.
- We do not name you or show your part publicly without your written consent. Case studies are anonymized.
- On request, we return or delete your files after the project, except where we must keep records for quality documentation or law. Retention period:
4. Parts orders (Part Supply)
- A parts order buys parts and the agreed quality documentation — not the process recipe.
- The build files, parameters and process settings we use to make your parts stay with us. We use them only to make your parts.
- The quality documentation for each order is agreed in the order. We do not claim certifications we do not hold.
5. Optimization and pre-industrialization projects
- If you want to run the process yourself, we agree licence or transfer terms at the start, not after. Scope and rights are written into the proposal before work starts.
- Deliverables such as reports, inspection data and documentation packages are listed in the rights schedule with the right you receive.
- A corrected build file delivered in an optimization project may be used for the named part on the named machine, within the term stated in the proposal. Production use beyond that is covered by a process licence.
- Ownership of design changes we propose is agreed in the proposal. The methods we used to find them remain ours.
- The process recipe and NEOFORGE models remain NEOFORGE's unless a transfer of ownership is explicitly contracted. Even then, our models and software are not included.
6. Process licences
- A process licence gives you specified usage rights: which part, which machine or machine model, which site, for how long, and in what volume.
- A licence does not by itself transfer ownership of the recipe or the underlying IP.
- Licence fees are either an annual fee per part number or a fee per part produced, as agreed in the proposal.
- Using the process on a part, machine or site not named in the licence needs an extension of the licence and, for a new machine, a transfer package.
7. Transfer packages
- A process window belongs to the alloy, not the machine. We translate it to each machine through the thermal process and the machine interface. Never a file copy.
- A print file never transfers unchanged to any machine. Transfer is engineered and validated per target machine.
- A transfer package may include documentation, adaptation to specified equipment and sites, validation builds and support. The contents are listed in the proposal.
- A transfer is complete when validation builds on the target machine meet the criteria agreed in the proposal.
8. Materials and process parameters
- Your powder compositions, powder data and test data remain yours.
- Process windows and material models we develop remain NEOFORGE's. They are licensed, per machine or customer, as set out in the agreement.
- We do not claim achieved readiness levels. Whether a material is production-ready is decided by the evidence, by you and by your qualification authority.
9. ForgeOS software
- ForgeOS Production Copilot and ForgeOS Engineering Copilot are licensed, not sold. They are delivered as a service by our engineers or installed in your environment. We do not offer them as a cloud service.
- Your data processed with ForgeOS remains yours. Build files you create with a licensed ForgeOS installation are yours to use on the licensed machines.
10. When a licence ends
- Parts already produced may still be used, sold and maintained.
- Your designs and data stay yours; we return or delete them on request.
- Paid-for deliverables can still be used for the purposes stated in the rights schedule.
- Production use of a licensed process ends, except for any agreed run-out or sustainment period.
- Use of NEOFORGE software ends.
- Confidentiality continues for the period stated in the contract.
11. Data handling at upload
- Upload your part through Submit Your Part. Files are used only to prepare your technical assessment and any quote you ask for.
- The technical assessment is a screening supported by our models, reviewed by an engineer before it reaches you. They are not a quotation and not a printability guarantee.
- Files are encrypted in transit and at rest and hosted in Germany, under EU GDPR. Access is limited to the engineers working on your request. See Data security.
- If you need an NDA before sharing files, ask us and we will sign one before you upload.
Your signed proposal or contract takes precedence over this policy.
Rights questions
Who owns my designs and data?
You do. Your designs and data remain yours.
Do I get the process recipe when I order parts?
No. A parts order buys parts and the agreed quality documentation — not the process recipe.
What if I want to run the process myself?
If you want to run the process yourself, we agree licence or transfer terms at the start, not after. A process licence grants specified usage rights — for example by machine, site, part and term. A transfer package can add documentation, adaptation to your equipment, validation builds and support.
Does a licence make the recipe mine?
No. A process licence gives you defined rights to use the process. It does not by itself transfer ownership of the recipe or the underlying intellectual property. If you need more, we discuss it at the start of the project.
Can I take the print file to another machine or supplier?
A process window belongs to the alloy, not the machine. We translate it to each machine through the thermal process and the machine interface. Never a file copy. Where transfer is agreed, we adapt and validate the process for each target machine.
Do you buy or sell NEOFORGE models and software?
NEOFORGE models and software remain NEOFORGE's. They are licensed, not sold.
Do you train your models on my geometry?
Not without your written consent. Insights we gain about the process may improve our models in generic form, never in a form that can be traced back to your part.
What is a "recipe"?
The full set of process settings for a part on a specific machine: orientation, supports, exposure strategy, laser parameters and the related post-processing route. It is developed for one part on one machine type and validated by builds.
Can I buy the recipe outright?
Normally we license it. A licence gives you specified usage rights for a part, machine, site, term and volume, and does not by itself transfer ownership of the recipe or the underlying IP. Ownership transfer is possible only if agreed and priced in the proposal, and never includes our models or software.
When should we discuss licences or transfer?
Before the project starts. If you want to run the process yourself, we agree licence or transfer terms at the start, not after. That way the project is planned for your machines from day one.
What is in a transfer package?
It can include documentation, adaptation to your specified equipment and sites, validation builds and support during ramp-up. The exact contents and the acceptance criteria are written into the proposal.
What happens when a licence ends?
Parts already produced can still be used, sold and maintained. Your designs and data stay yours. Paid-for reports and documentation remain usable as agreed. Production use of the licensed process ends, unless a run-out or sustainment period was agreed.
What happens to my files when I upload them?
We use them only to prepare your technical assessment and any quote you request. Only the engineers working on your request see them. We do not use them to train models shared with other customers without your written consent. On request, we return or delete them after the project. If you need an NDA first, we sign it before you upload.
A specific contract question?
Ask before you send the part.
